Logbook and observer data were obtained from state agencies WA Fisheries, NT DBIRD, QDPI, Logbook and observer data for fisheries in commonwealth waters were collected from AFMA and CMR - Hobart. Visits were also made to Museums to gather catch records and measure and photograph sawfish remains. This dataset is the result of a desktop study carried out by J. Giles whilst based at Cleveland. The spatial and biological catch data on sawfish was obtained from as many sources as possible in northern Australia; including commercial fisheries, research and recreational sectors and historical data sets. This also includes morphometric data on sawfish and rostra held in public and private collections.

This record describes the datasets obtained on Courageous Cruise 045. The data were obtained from the Great Australian Bight in January and February 1979. Data were obtained from acoustic and trawl surveys for pelagic and demersal fish . The species studied included Chinaman leatherjacket (Navon ayraud), Green-backed stingaree and Pilchard (Sardinops sagax). Length, numbers, weight and target signal strength were determined. Plankton samples were taken at intervals during the cruise. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the cruise summary for this voyage.(derived from the cruise report) - Biological Field Data Sheets recorded during this voyage have been scanned to PDF, and are available (to CSIRO Staff) on-line. See the details link under "Stored Media List" (below).

This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Soela cruise SO 4/81. This cruise took place in waters off the New South Wales coast during 25 September - 18 October 1981, under the leadership of Brian Griffiths. Biological data collected on this cruise include phytoplankton, zooplankton, and micronekton samples from in and around an oceanic front. Vertical distribution data of phyllosoma larvae from two sites. Data from in vivo fluorescence experiments on dark adaptation of surface phytoplankton. Mesoplegic fish samples for parasite studies (Univ. New England). Please note: This metadata record is a preliminary entry derived from information in the cruise plan and/or cruise report. Individual data types - which may span several cruises - will be indexed separately within this metadata system in due course.

This database, named "Biodata", contains biological and station data from cruises of Divisional research vessels "Courageous" and "Soela" between February 1978 and April 1989, and also some data from "Sprightly" for the period August 1979-May 1980, and the chartered vessel "Jacqueline D" from August 1986-November 1988 in Albatross Bay, Gulf of Carpentaria. The data were originally stored within a special section of the AFZIS (Australian Fishing Zone Information System) database in Canberra, developed jointly by CSIRO Division of Fisheries Research and Department of Primary Industry (DPI), and were retrieved before the DPI Cyber computer was decommissioned. Data from Soela cruises for 1985, 1986, and the first 6 cruises of 1987 are not represented in this dataset. Information held comprises vessel, cruise and station identifiers, and details for 3,000 (+) operations including date, time, latitude, longitude, operation type, gear type, trawl details, surface temperature and salinity where measured, fishing effort and catch by species, and length-frequency data where recorded. The data are presently in an Oracle database in Hobart.

This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Southern Surveyor cruise SS 03/94. This cruise took place in waters off eastern Tasmania during 18-31 May 1994, under the leadership of Jock Young. Biological data collected on this cruise include samples of zooplankton, surface plankton (for the larval fish group), samples from night time midwater trawls including one day time trawl, and acoustic data from the EK 500 at frequencies of 38 and 120 KHz. Please note: This metadata record is a preliminary entry derived from information in the cruise plan and/or cruise report. Individual data types - which may span several cruises - will be indexed separately within this metadata system in due course.

This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Southern Surveyor cruise SS 04/95. This cruise took place in the north-western Coral Sea during 9-26 May 1995, under the leadership of Roland Pitcher. Biological data collected on this cruise include phyllosoma and puerulus larvae samples, video photography of live captured larvae in ship-board aquaria and gut content samples for subsequent analysis. Please note: This metadata record is a preliminary entry derived from information in the cruise plan. The biological data collected on this cruise will be updated when cruise report is available. Individual data types - which may span several cruises - will be indexed separately within this metadata system in due course.

This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Southern Surveyor cruise SS 11/95, a part of the JGOFS Southern Ocean Processes study. This cruise took place in the Southern Ocean during 15 November - 7 December 1995, under the leadership of Bronte Tilbrook. Biological data include measurements of in-situ optical properties, including spectral absorption and upwelling and down-welling spectral irradiance in different water masses west of Tasmania. DMS, and DMSP measurements. Dissolved and particulate organic carbon and isotopic composition. Radon measurements, zooplankton and larval fish abundance, nekton biomass estimates using both midwater trawls and acoustic backscatter measurements. Atmospheric chemistry and cloud measurements were also undertaken as part of the ACE-1 International Global Atmospheric Chemistry project. Please note: This metadata record is a preliminary entry derived from information in the cruise plan and/or cruise report. Individual data types - which may span several cruises - will be indexed separately within this metadata system in due course.
